Independiente

It would be unthinkable for the “Rey de Copas” not to be among the giants of Argentine soccer. Independiente, after all, is the biggest title holder in the history of the Copa Libertadores, with seven titles.

In addition to these glories, the club has accumulated nine more international victories recognized by both Conmebol and FIFA, which places it among the ten most triumphant teams in the world in this regard.

Independiente can also boast of having been the main protagonists of Argentine soccer before the emergence of Boca Juniors and River Plate. With a total of 16 league titles to their name, the club lifted the trophy on eight occasions between the 1920s and 1960s alone.

San Lorenzo

Don’t be fooled: San Lorenzo is much more than just the Pope’s team. Long before winning the devotion of the faithful, the club had already secured its place among the big five of Argentine soccer.

Despite occupying the “modest” 4th position in this select group, the number of Argentine league titles validates its presence: there are 15 trophies, behind only River Plate, Boca Juniors, Racing Club and Independiente. This same position is reflected in the fans’ ranking, estimated at around 1.5 million fervent followers.

And there’s no shortage of fervor. You only have to look at Pope Francis’ enthusiasm, as well as the grandiose celebration the fans had after San Lorenzo’s historic Copa Libertadores win in 2014.

Racing Club

Racing Club is recognized as one of Argentina’s big five clubs, and rightly so. Known as “La Academia” – a nickname that refers to the style of play of the 1930s, similar to Palmeiras’ nickname – it is the third biggest winner of the Argentine league.

The club has won 18 national titles, as well as 12 Argentine Cups, a Copa Libertadores and a world title;

For a long time, the Avellaneda derby, played with Independiente, was considered the biggest in Argentina, due to the number of victories won by both teams during the Amateur and Primera Division eras.
