Golf glossary: get to know the terms
Albatross
An albatross is a term that describes a rare situation in golf where a player completes a hole with three shots under par. An albatross happens, for example, when you hit a par 5 hole in just two shots.
Approach
The approach shot is a shot made to get the ball as close to the hole as possible, usually from the fairway. It’s a precise shot, usually made with an iron or wedge, and its purpose is to prepare a good position for the final putt.
Backspin
Backspin is the backward rotation effect applied to the ball when it is hit. This effect causes the ball to stop quickly or even go backwards when it touches the ground, and is especially useful on approach shots and when trying to stop the ball on the green.
Birdie
A birdie is a score in golf that occurs when the player completes a hole with a shot under par. Hitting a par 4 hole in three shots, for example, results in a birdie. It’s a positive achievement and often celebrated by players.
Bogey
Bogey is the term used when a player completes a hole with a shot over the designated par. For example, hitting a par 4 hole in five shots results in a bogey.
Bunker
A bunker is an obstacle on the golf course, usually filled with sand. These areas are designed to challenge players, as they require specific skills to get out of them and continue the game without losing too many strokes.
Caddie
The caddie is the person who carries the player’s golf clubs and offers advice on the game, including suggestions on which club to use and how to deal with certain types of shots.
Chip
A chip is a short shot hit close to the green with the aim of getting the ball on the green and close to the hole. It is usually hit with a wedge or a high lofted iron, requiring precision and control.
Clubhouse
The clubhouse is the social headquarters of a golf course, where players can relax, eat, drink and socialize before and after their rounds. It is also the place where the course’s administration and organization facilities are located.
Drive
The drive is the first shot made at a hole, usually from the tee with a driver, which is a club designed for maximum distance. The aim is to get the ball as far away as possible and into a good position for the next shot.
Eagle
An eagle is a score that occurs when a player completes a hole with two shots under par. Hitting a par 4 hole in two shots, for example, results in an eagle. It’s an excellent score and less common than a birdie.
Fade
Fade is a type of shot in which the ball curves slightly to the right (for a right-handed player) during flight. It is often used to avoid obstacles or adjust the trajectory of the ball to the shape of the hole.
Fairway
The fairway is a well-kept area of short grass that stretches from the tee to the green, clear of obstacles. It is the ideal area where players aim to position their shots after the drive, ensuring an easier surface to hit the next shot.
Flagstick
The flagstick, or flag, is a pole with a flag placed on the hole on the green, marking its location. It serves as a visual target for players during their shots.
Green
The green is the final area of the hole, where it is located. The grass on the green is cut extremely short to allow the ball to roll smoothly, making it easier to putt.
Handicap
In golf, the handicap is a system that levels the playing conditions between players of different abilities. It also represents the average number of shots over par that a player expects to achieve and is used to adjust scores in competitions.
Hole-in-one
A hole-in-one is a shot in which the ball goes straight from the tee to the hole in a single stroke. This is a rare feat in golf, especially when it occurs on par 3 holes.
Hook
Hook is a type of shot in which the ball curves sharply to the left (for a right-handed player) during flight. It is usually unwanted and can be caused by incorrect technique.
Iron
Iron is a category of golf clubs with metal heads. They vary in loft and are numbered according to the distance the ball must travel and are used for a variety of shots on the course.
Lie
Lie is the position of the ball on the course after a shot. It can describe whether the ball is in a favorable or unfavorable position, such as in the fairway, rough, or in an obstacle.
Mulligan
Mulligan is an informal term used to describe a second chance to make a shot without penalty, granted on the first shot of a hole, usually. It is not recognized by the official rules of golf.
Par
Par is the standard number of strokes a skilled player must take to complete a hole. Each hole on the golf course has a designated par, which can be 3, 4 or 5, depending on its distance and difficulty.
Pitch
In golf, the pitch is a high, short shot, usually hit with a wedge, which is used to overcome obstacles and stop the ball quickly on the green. It happens when a chip shot is not enough to reach the green.
Putt
A putt is a shot made onto the green with a putter, with the aim of rolling the ball into the hole. Putting is a crucial part of the game, requiring precision and fine control.
Rough
The rough is the area of taller, thicker grass next to the fairway and green. Shots that land in the rough are more difficult to control due to the resistance of the tall grass.
Sand wedge
The sand wedge is a type of wedge designed to come out of sand bunkers. It has a high loft and a design that makes it easy to lift the ball out quickly.
Slice
Slice is a type of shot in which the ball makes a sharp turn to the right (for a right-handed player) during flight. It’s not something athletes want, as it can be the consequence of incorrect technique.
Tee
The tee is the small support, usually made of wood or plastic, used to lift the ball on the first shot of each hole. The area from which the first shot is made is also called the tee.
Wedge
Wedge is the name of a category of clubs with high lofts used for short, precise shots. It has several types, such as pitching wedge, sand wedge and lob wedge, each designed for different situations.
Wood
Wood is the term applied to a category of clubs used for long shots.
