Each stage was a knockout, until there were only two athletes left who fought each other to determine the winner.

The transition to what we know today as the modern pentathlon took place at the end of the 19th century, thanks to a Swedish officer who had the idea of adapting the sport to simulate a military situation.

The intention was to recreate the scenario of a soldier delivering messages behind enemy lines, starting on horseback, passing through shooting, fencing and swimming, and ending with a race.
