The short track speed skating rink is oval-shaped and measures 111.12 meters in length. The minimum width is 6 meters, which provides enough space for the skaters to perform their maneuvers at high speed.

Short track speed skating rules: duration
Races in short track speed skating vary in distance and are usually contested in races of 500 meters, 1000 meters, 1500 meters and, in some more professional competitions, up to 3000 meters.
The length of each race depends on the distance and the speed of the skaters. A 500-meter race, for example, can be completed in less than 45 seconds by elite athletes.
The competition is then divided into several rounds, including preliminary heats, quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals.
The main objective of short-track speed skating is to progress through these rounds to the final, where the big winners and medalists will be decided.
In relay events, the races can be even longer, with each team of four skaters completing a total distance of 3000 meters (women) or 5000 meters (men).

Therefore, each skater must wear specific short-track skates, which have longer, sharper blades that allow them to make tighter turns at greater speed.

Scoring in short-track speed skating is based on the order of finish of the skaters, just as it is in other types of racing.
- In individual competitions, then, skaters accumulate points according to their placings in each round, and the best-placed skaters advance to the next rounds.
- And in relay events, the team that crosses the finish line first is declared the big winner.
