Baseball glossary: find out what the sport’s terms mean

Pitcher

In baseball, the pitcher is the player responsible for throwing the ball towards the batter.

Offense

Offense is the phase of baseball in which a team tries to score points while batting.

Curveball

A curveball is a type of pitch that makes the ball curve toward the baseball hitter.

Fastball

In baseball, a fastball is the name given to a fast and direct pitch.

Infield

In baseball, the area of the field that includes the base, the mound and the surrounding area is called the infield.

Outfield

The outfield is the area of the baseball field that goes beyond the infield, where the defenders play.

Out

In baseball, an out is when a batter is removed from the game for some reason, whether serious or not.

Error

In baseball, an error is a mistake made by a defensive player that allows a runner to advance or a hitter to reach base.

Grand Slam

In sports, a grand slam is a home run with all the bases occupied, resulting in four runs.

Home Plate (Diamond)

The home plate, or diamond, is the pentagon-shaped base where the batter stands and which marks the end point of the bases circuit.

Home Run

A home run is when the batter manages to run the bases and return to the home plate in a single play.

Mound

The mound is the elevated mound where the pitcher stands to throw the baseball.

Batter

The batter is the player who tries to hit the ball thrown by the pitcher.

Hit

A hit occurs when the batter manages to touch the ball and advance to the base.

Three Strikes Rule

The three-strike rule occurs when the batter gets three strikes and is out.

Strike

A strike, on the other hand, is a pitched ball that the hitter tries and fails to hit, or a ball inside the strike zone that the hitter does not try to hit.

Suicide

A play in which a runner tries to advance to the next base, even though it may result in an out, is called a suicide.

Bat

The bat is the bat used by hitters to try to hit the ball.

Strike Zone

The strike zone is the area over home plate that is considered legal for a pitch.

Walk

The walk happens when the pitcher gives the batter four balls, allowing him to advance to first base.
